·         Archbishop Lori’s Challenge: This month, I challenge you to introduce devotions to Blessed Michael McGivney — such as the Blessed Michael McGivney Novena — into your prayer life. Second, I challenge you to participate in the Faith in Action Family Prayer Night program, incorporating devotions to Blessed Michael McGivney such as the Blessed Michael McGivney Prayer Hour.

Membership Report: Membership Director Greg Peters

·         Council 12017 will hold our annual fall membership drive after all masses October 7th & 8th. Need volunteers to help man the recruitment table before and after each mass. At a minimum you should plan on wearing your membership badge. The council will have recruitment literature available, Form 100’s, and online registration instructions.

·         The Spanish nametags have been ordered and are coming.

·         The council currently has 187 members.

·         Faith Director Report: Faith Director John Clyatt

·         COR (Heart) Program- COR exists to form and strengthen Catholic men in faith and virtue as missionary disciples by drawing them into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer, formation, and fraternity.  The meetings will be the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Thursday every month at 7-830PM. The first meeting was September 21st and had 8 in attendance.  Three councils were represented and one non-Knight.  Our next meeting is 5 Oct.  Our topic will be the depth, breadth and glory of the Mass.

·         Building the Domestic Church kiosk- have kiosk.  Books are on back order.

·         Knights Quarterly Mass: September 30, 5pm volunteers needed to serve as readers, ushers, greeters, sacristan, extraordinary ministers of holy communion and cantor.

·         Eucharistic Congress- Pay attention to what is in the Church Bulletin.  We may have some carpooling.  More emails should be coming.

·         Catholic Charities food truck driver/delivery: Catholic Charities is in need of volunteer drivers to deliver our health food boxes to our clients in New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus and Bladen Co. Using 1 of 2 of our delivery vans, we have morning and afternoon routes available, routes last approximately 2.5-3 hours. Two more knights have volunteered. ·         Catholic essay contest in September chaired by Sal (Bud) Tascone This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. cell 570-351-8076.  This year we will be hosting 73 8th grade students from St. Mark School.  The theme of the essay is "How can the Church evangelize in the digital age?"  Students must submit a typed essay of 500-750 words.  Their English teacher is making this a mandatory assignment and she will judge her students and recommend the best 15 essays to us, by mid-October.  Our Knight's judging committee will then pick the winners. The number and amount of monetary awards is still under discussion.

·         Blankets for the Homeless fundraising Gumbo dinner September 30 after 5pm Mass, chaired by Greg Peters cell 910-899-8273) setup/cleanup help needed. Distributions: Good Shepherd House: Distribution will occur Wednesday October 18th.  We will need three Knights besides myself that can volunteer to meet at Good Shepherd located at 811 Martin Street (back office entrance) from 11 AM until 1 PM.  Salvation Army: I spoke with Major Ken Morris who manages the local Salvation Army operations. The Salvation Army has closed the downtown operation and is in the process of building a new facility. They are supporting donations to the homeless from suite  300 A located in the Harrelson Center. They are extremely flexible thus anytime in October is good. My suggestion would be to supply the blankets on October 18th after Good Shepherd. Need one or two Knights willing to help deliver blankets.

·         Coats for Kids fundraiser after all Masses September 9-10 volunteers was a great success chaired by This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. cell: 941-223-6518. Over $5K raised and 250 coats are being purchased for distribution in Nov and Dec.  More to come as sites are picked out and dates are set. Hopefully there will be a Sign-up Genius on our website.  If anyone is an expert in Sign-up Genius please let the GK know.

·         Columbus Day Pasta Dinner - Quickly approaching is the Columbus Day Pasta Dinner on October 7.  Most important is for you to make your reservations this week if you want a seat and want to eat!  Just go to our website and there’s a link at the bottom of the announcement to purchase tickets.  Also needed on the day of the event will be servers, set up, and tear down/cleanup teams. ·         Football Pool- status WGK won thanks to the beloved Steelers, overall pool going well and money is flowing to the winners!  Funds raised are committed to our Life programs and are exceeding plan.

·         Baby Bottle Campaign- contact Michael at (910)409-8101; starts 10/1(9/30 Vigil) and ends 10/29.  Volunteers are needed for all Masses. Volunteers to recruit children walking into Mass and lead them in passing out bottles after Mass. Perhaps introduce themselves  to the Dad for Knight recruiting -- an intergenerational effort.

·         Life Chain-10/1 at 2:30 by old Kmart (Approved signs from Judy, not Knights signs). Sacrifice of time to pray w/ others and silent witness, and not watching football for an hour.  Be there!  Witness to the Protestants that Catholics can step up!

·         Room at the Inn- $500 ASAP donation plus $100 from Supreme.

·         Wilmington Life March- Save the Date set for 2/17 and mark your calendars. (we cover the license).

 Fourth Degree Report: SK Larry Greer

·         Monthly meetings on the third Tuesday at 7pm at St. Mark and other council locations. See the calendar on the assembly website https://kofc2017.org/calendar.

·         Quarterly Ashley House dinner on 10 September was another success.  The next one will be in Jan of 2024.

·         John Bolger will start collecting for shoe boxes for Ashley House Vets. 15 boxes were picked up.  Bring them back to the meeting next month.  We could use a few more (approx. 24 vets there now).  Just fill with basic items like soap, tooth paste, tooth brushes, deodorant, socks, gloves, etc.

·         Wreaths Across America is a fundraiser for the assembly and supported by the our council. Grand Knight’s Report: GK Cary Newman

·         Double Star award being presented by State Officers at the 10/24 council meeting.

·         Christmas Party details being finalized but the date remains 12/18.

·         Brothers Brewery Night was discussed and by a vote of the brothers present, it was agreed that Tuesday nights are better than Monday nights.  GK Newman will set up the next one with a target date in November.

·         Plenty of activity and need new volunteers to help us with events.  Remember that if you volunteer to support an event, we are counting on your presence.  It is a fraternal commitment.

·         Father Greg has announced a new policy regarding announcements at Mass.  He will no longer allow announcements between Communion and the Final Blessing so that we do no insert secular focus into the Mass.  He will allow announcements after the final verse of the closing hymn.  Given this new policy, we will focus on the bulletin for  our announcements of recognition ( such as family of the month) and other announcements such as Membership Weekend.  We will also try to get an abbreviated form of the announcement into the opening announcements prior to Mass.
