Business Meeting September 23, 2015 Knights of Columbus 12017

The Grand Knight, Ken Dieppa, called the meeting to order and received a report from the Warden that all present were in possession of their membership cards. The opening prayer was said and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

The Opening Ode was not sung due to the expected length of the meeting.

The Grand knight mentioned that we will continue to have both a pre- and post-meeting social.

Two visitors were present, both knights from other councils, John Farry and Steven Fabian from UNCW, both of which will transfer in. Also in attendance was Miguel Saldana who will be a First Degree candidate. 

Chaplain Report:

  • Fr. Keane asked us to keep the Pope in our prayers during his stay in the US. He commented on the very positive attention of the world toward this visit and hoped that the Holy Spirit will touch hearts. The pope is the Vicar of Christ.  He hopes that his words will be listened to and taken to heart..
  • Fr. Keane asked about whether the council holds a Christmas card sale saying how well received it had been in his prior parishes to "keep Christ in Christmas" and as one source for truly religious Christmas card. 
  • He also asked whether we hold an annual Memorial Mass and suggested that it encompass all four Masses of a weekend with knights assuming many roles (lecturers, ushers, EHMCs, etc.) Part of the ceremony could be listing the names of all deceased knights of the council.
  • The grand Knight purchased a new Mary statue for our table and had Fr. Keane bless it.

Approval of Minutes:

  • The minutes from August's meeting are on the council website; no corrections were offered so were approved without modification. The motion for approval was made by Jeff Goodshall and seconded by Kenny Merck.

Admission Committee Report:

  • Two transfers acceepted - John Farry, PGK of 7343 in Charlotte; and Steven Fabian. 
  • No membership applications have been received. 
  • For Retention, Jeff Kranich reported on the quarterly attempt to reach all those not attending meetings to try to get them to return. He thanked those that assisted in the calling. 

Balloting for Membership: 

  • None.

Grand Knight Report:

  • The Grand Knight asked for a review of the Functional Email addresses as presented in the agenda. 
  • A "Job Fair" will be held after the meeting at the back of the room with descriptions of our various program areas and sign-up sheets for those interested.
  • Changes to the budget that was presented last month were described.
    • While not specific to the budget, the decision to have a reduced annual dues for Active Military and Fulltime Students was announced. The only change requested was that it be noted that "deployed" military are exempt from paying dues. 
    • The use of the Square payment service was described as the costs were amended. 
    • The allocation for banners was increased and will now cover IFF, keep Christ in Christmas, Respect Life and Recruiting.  (As an aside, Fr. Keane approved both Keep Christ in Christmas and Respect Life banners in concept. Actual designs should be shown to him a s a courtesy.)
    • One final item was added to the budget - a monthly attendance drawing.
    • A motion to accept the budget was made by Jeff Godshall and seconded by Ron Daniels. 
  • The proposed budget was presented. Two suggestions were offered by Larry Lambe: to obtain two banners each (one for Keep Christ in Christmas, the other for Right to Life), and to donate money to the Rosary Maker ministry. The GK asked him to research the costs and report back. 

Treasurer Report:

  • The Treasurer reported on the account balances. 

Bills and Communications:

  • None received. 

Financial Secretary Report:

  • Name badges will be ordered following the First Degree.  Anyone desiring a name badge, let him know so that it can be included in the order. Typically, he won't order badges until he has at least a half dozen because of the shipping costs. 
  • 100 copies of "These Men They Call Knights" and equivalent number of Form 100s were ordered and received. 

Report of Service Program Committees:

  • The positions of Program Director, Council Director and Family Director have been filled by Mark Pahl, Craig Stinson and Steve Shelton, respectively.
  • Church:
    • Church director Peters talked about the upcoming Parish Mission occurring on 10/16-17.
    • Greg Decker reported on the first Fifth Sunday Rosary and the need to have it precede Mass. The 9:30 Mass was selected by vote. The next three Fifth Sunday Rosary dates are 11/29, 1/31 and 5/29.
    • The Facilities Committee was move under Church. Greg Decker reported that the Boy Scouts will be included as resources for any work. Also that sign-up will be for both work-days as well as ad hoc requirements. The Grand Knight asked that the council closet be included as a work-day project. 
    • Christmas Caroling at the nursing homes is scheduled for 12/12 being led by Tim Niggel and Jeff Godshall. This may take the place of the December meeting.
    • A Men's Retreat is being investigated; probably along the lines of the women's upcoming retreat.
    • Tree lot truck unloading will be the Friday after Thanksgiving, 11/27.
    • Feedback was requested by the Grand Knight about the Parish Breakfast in September; i.e., how to improve attendance.
    • A Parish Priest Appreciation Mass will be held on 10/25 at the 7:30 Mass.
    • The date of the IFF was announced as 4/23/16. 
  • Council:
    • Webmaster Greg Decker asked that all program directors review their section of the website and provide descriptions of their individual programs with the aim of informing both brother knights and the public as to what we do. 
  • Community:
    • Ron Probst will again host the Thanksgiving Day Dinner at the parish from 1-3 pm on Thanksgiving. There will be no cost for the dinner. Donations and volunteers are needed though.
    • Columbus Day Dinner Dance - Joe Hellman reported for Andy Exposito that the phone chain did not result in the needed ticket sales so reminded the brotherhood that we all need to actively sell tickets to the event. Tickets will be sold after all Masses on the weekends of 9/26-27 and 10/3-4. And, as usual, help is needed to set up and tear down.
  • Culture of Life:
    • The prayer vigil date for October is Wednesday, 10/7 from 9-10.
    • The NFL Football Pool was less than successful with only about 160 of 200 booklets sold. Over half were sold by other than knights of our council. Thus, our ability to support culture of life events and activities will be hampered.
    • 40 Days for Life begins today, 9/23, and runs through 11/1. A handout on the 40 Days for Life will be available at the "job fair" following the meeting. 
  • Family: (No one to report)
  • Youth:
    • Paul Abbe reported that the Free Throw contest is planned for 1/9 in the St. Mark Gym with Tom Woodard assisting. 

LAMB Report:

  • The LAMB report was made by the Community Director for Andy Exposito.

Trustees report:

  • The audit was completed in August successfully. 

New Business:

  • None.

Fourth Degree Report:

  • SK Ron Daniels reported that the next exemplification will be in November in Raleigh but will be one day only. The cutoff date for anyone interested is mid-October. Information packets are available from Greg Decker.

Insurance Agent Report:

  • Insurance Agent Marty Yakimovich talked about a few things:
  • Congratulated the council on all the good work that it does. 
  • Reminded us that September is "Life Insurance Awareness Month".
  • Told us about how the Special Olympics held in LA in July were well represented by the Knights of Columbus.
  • Told a story about how a woman at the Naval Hospital in Camp Lejeune was assisted by our brother knight Andy Exposito. 

District Deputy Report: 

  • DD Frank Weisgerber presented the Columbian & Founders Award to the Grand Knight. This award was for the past Fraternal Year under PGK Jim Laraia.
  • Upcoming dates:
    • 10/10 - Council 1074 Golf Tournament
    • 10/17 - Regional meeting in Swansboro
    • 10/24 - Second Degree here at St. Mark.

Good of the Order:
