Business Meeting July 16, 2015 Knights of Columbus 12017

The Grand Knight, Ken Dieppa, called the meeting to order and received a report from the Warden that all present were in possession of their membership cards. The opening prayer was said and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Chaplain Report:

  • Our pastor, Fr. Patrick Keane, has agreed to be the council Chaplain. However, he cannot make the Thursday meetings because of other commitments. He would prefer Wednesday. A discussion ensued as to moving the meeting and other options. A motion was made by Merck and seconded by Dieppa to explore keeping the meeting on Thursday but establish a roundtable to occur at the Chaplain's discretion. 
  • GK Dieppa reviewed a discussion he had with the Chaplain and reported in an email of 7/16 which is included here:

"Generally we covered two topics (what the Chaplain would like to see the KofC start & what we should continue doing)

What we should continue doing:

      1. LAMB
      2. Seminarian Support
      3. Culture of Life (Baby Bottle Drive, etc.)
      4. Support Parish Breakfast*
      5. Fish Fry (during Lent)*
      6. Columbus Dinner & Dance
      7. St. Patrick Dinner & Dance

What the Chaplain would like:

      1. Stewardship in the Parish (e.g. periodic Parish Cleanup to keep grounds looking manicured)
      2. Free Throw Contest (with youth) using our Gym
      3. A Signature KofC attraction for the IFF (e.g. game, etc. that gives the KofC more visibility)
      4. Donations to the Parish (e.g.
        1. Marian Statue (or base) for the front of SMCC with KofC plaque
        2.  –or-screens in church @ 1st row
        3. -or- folding chairs)"

Approval of Minutes:

  • The minutes from June's meeting are on the council website; no corrections were offered so were approved without modification.

Admission Committee Report:

  • No membership applications have been received. 
  • A discussion ensued about the need for a First Degree as it's been about six months since the last one. Agreed that one should occur in October following the September blitz. A second blitz will occur in early March. 

Balloting for Membership: 

  • None as no applications to act upon.
  • Godshall reported on three transfers: Chris Smith from 1074, John Novak from 5903 and Jim Edens from 12885. 

Grand Knight Report:

  • Installation of Officers is scheduled for Sunday, 7/26, at 1:50pm in the Parish Hall. 
  • The local Habitat for Humanity project to build a "Pope Francis" home is underway having been started with a $60,000 donation. To donate time or talent, contact the Grand Knight.
  • The Knight of the Month is Paul Abbe for his involvement in the youth group's attendance at Steubenville Atlanta, one of the major summer youth conferences presented by Franciscan University of Steubenville.
  • No Family of the Month for June.
  • The dress code for our meetings will continue to be business casual.
  • Our council is the first council this fraternal year to have the Traveling Gavel. We will transport it to the next council, the Harry J. "Hap" Hansen III Council in Hampstead. 

Treasurer Report:

  • The Treasurer reported on the account balances. 

Bills and Communications:

  • None received. 

Financial Secretary Report:

  • He and Treasurer are working on the budget for the next FY.

Report of Service Program Committees:

  • The position of Program Director is vacant and in need of a volunteer.
  • Church:
    • Church director Peters reported on the Steubenville Atlanta conference where he, his wife Joel, and Paul Abbe chaperoned 14 youths.
    • Would like to explore something like t-shirts for the Raleigh diocesan youth for next year. 
    • IFF next year.
  • Culture of Life:
    • No Prayer Vigil scheduled during July.
    • The primary Culture of Life fundraiser is the NFL Football Pool. Booklets are available after the meeting. For every ten booklets sold, the seller gets one free. The first game is 9/14.

LAMB Report:

  • LAMB director Exposito reported on the first two weekends of LAMB street collections and need for help on the remaining dates:
    • 7/18: Hanover Center
    • 7/25: Lumina Commons
    • 8/1: Oak Landing

Trustees report:

  • The audit needs to be completed and will probably occur at the next planning meeting.

New Business:

  • Brother Kotas reported on recent Parish Council meeting:
    • The parish wants to start a food pantry and utilize the old chapel off the Parish Hall. Shelving will be installed. It was suggested that each member bring food for the pantry or $10 donation next month. Brother Decker suggested that a "food list" be developed and used so as to stock needed food items rather than a plethora of items. 
    • The Saunders Burney Memorial Fund is open and accepting donations. 
    • Privacy kneelers are needed for the front row of pews.
    • A Marian statue for in front of the school is planned. 
    • The IFF was a success; hope for a 50% increase of income next year. 
    • The diocese is exploring purchase of land in the Ogden area for a high school.

Fourth Degree Report:

  • SK Daniels reported:
    • The next Fourth Degree meeting will be Tuesday, 7/21. 
    • Presented a certificate from the assembly to the council for their participation in the 21 Day Flag Salute. 

District Deputy Report:

  • DD1 Weisgerber said the move of our council to District 25 will not occur.
  • The 365 report is due 8/1 and audit due 8/15.
  • 1074 will sponsor the State Golf tournament in Bolivia in September. 
  • Supreme is interested in inviting non-knights to meetings as a recruitment tool.
  • Our council received the NC State Family Award. 

Good of the Order:

  • Decker thanked the membership for their prayers leading up to his recent surgery. 
  • Prayers were requested and offered for the following:
    • Four Marines killed in Chattanooga
    • Kathy Wagner
    • Roy Parker
    • Deacon Orlando and family
    • Jim Riesmeyer
    • Jim Laraia's children
